Abstract
The clinical effectiveness of fosfocin was studied in 20 patients with genitourinary tract infections (10 acute simple cases and 10 complicated cases). The drug was given in doses of 2 gm twice a day by intravenous drip infusion for 4 to 10 days.
The following results were obtained:
1. In the cases with simple acute UTI, clinical efficacy were excellent in 70%, moderate in 20% and poor in 10%, overall effectiveness rate being 90%.
In the cases with complicated UTI, clinical efficacy were excellent in 30%, moderate in 40% and poor in 3Q%, overall effectiveness rate being 70%.
Of the 10 cases with complicated UTI, 8 cases had inderwelling urinary catheter of whom clinical efficacy was moderate in 4 cases and poor in 4 cases and effectiveness rate was low (50/0).
Two cases had not inderwelling urinary catheter of whom clinical efficacy was excellent in 1 case and moderate in i case and the effectiveness rate was high (100%).
2. Bacteriological studies showed 10 strains isolated from the urine. The effectiveness rate was 100% against Proteus vulgaris, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Streptococcus faecalis, 63.6% against E. coli and 50¡Æo against Staphylococcus aureus.
Enterobacter and Klebsiella showed to be resistant.
3. The side effects were dected in 5 cases. Peripheral blood examination showed a slight ,decrease in RBC, Hct., and Hb. levels in 1 case.
Liver function test showed a slight elevation of SGOT and SGPT in 2 cases. Kidney funn ction test showed elevation of BUN and creatinine in 1 case. A rise in Na and depletion of K was noted in 1 case.
In 1 case, the symptoms such as mild nausea, vomiting and skin eruption were noted but :Subsided soon after.
From the results obtained in this study, therapy of fosfocin seemed one of the useful trea tment of simple or complicated UTI.
